Link Building Mistakes To Avoid

It’s well known that building links is a very important way to rank highly in the search engines. What you have to realize, however, is that building links can harm as well as help your website if you simply build links randomly or without knowing what you are doing. Some newcomers to internet marketing put in a great deal of work link building, only to find out later that they were not going about it in the right way. Building links ethically and with proper planning leads to long term results and gives you an edge over the competition. It can be very useful for you to be aware of common link building mistakes made by internet marketing beginners. If you read the following description of common link building mistakes, you’ll know to avoid them.

It is a waste of time to place your links on any pages that the search engine cannot read.

A link might be perfect in every way, right from the anchor text to the “do-follow” tag, but still be worthless. Let me explain. There are sites that are not indexed by Google because of the robot.txt file, so, your links will not be counted when placed on one of these sites. So, if you want your backlinks counted then it is important that they be placed on search engine friendly pages.

The number one mistake internet marketers make when it comes to backlinks is focusing on numbers rather than quality. It might seem rational that a site with 100 links is going to be better ranked than one with 25. Yet all links are not equal in the “minds” of the search engines; some are valued above others. Quality matters more than quantity here. One backlink from a highly regarded authority site will do you more good than ten from low quality sites with low (or no) page rank. The fact is that getting low quality links can never equal getting backlinks from popular sites in your niche. Not only that, you can even get penalized for indulging into unethical practices if you go for too many low-quality links. The apparent shortcuts when it comes to link building won’t help you in the long run. If you want long term success, build it gradually by creating a high quality site and exchanging links with other good sites.

Keep in mind that PageRank (PR) measures the strength of a single page and the a whole site. For example, the homepage may have a PR of 2 and a newly created page will automatically be a PR 0. PageRank is one of the cornerstones in SEO and backlinking strategy; so, using it to your advantage will only help prove to be a good business move. To take the time and effort to build quality links can be frustrating at first but once you see how powerful they are you will strive for the best backlinks. A little patience and concentrating on quality links will make your site a powerhouse on the first page.
